Welcome

Welcome to Year 1, we look forward to working with you and your child over the next year. They have settled in well after the summer break.  Here is a brief outline of the topics we will be covering this term. Please come and speak to us if you have any questions or would like any further information. Please also check the boards outside our classrooms which are updated regularly with information.

Year One Curriculum Overview - Autumn 2017

We will be developing the children’s range of writing skills. We will be focussing on the stories of The Magic Porridge Pot and the Three Little Pigs. We will be learning the stories, rewriting them and innovating them to write our own version. We will also be looking at a non-chronological reports-focusing on making breakfast.

Year 1 continue to have daily phonics lessons. We will work on applying the phonemes they learnt in foundation stage and they will learn alternative graphemes.

We will be focusing on number confidence and place value during this term.

  • Learning to count to and across 100, forwards and backwards.

  • Read, write numbers from 1-20 in numerals and words

  • Identify one more and one less ten given numbers

  • Count, read and write numbers up to 100 in numerals, count in multiples of 2s,5s and 10s.

Our problem solving will continue throughout the year where we will learn to apply our new knowledge in a range of contexts.

Science

In Science, year one will be learning about everyday Materials, learning to distinguish between object and materials, identify everyday materials, describe simple physical properties and compare and group materials. We will be developing our investigation skills by conducting our own experiments on different materials

Humanities

Our topic this half term is houses and homes across the world. We will be learning about different types of houses and their purposes as well as comparing them to houses and different structures around the world. We will also be learning about what we have in our homes and how they help us. After October half term we will be learning about Toys and how they have changed over time.

Art and Design

In art, we will be learning to mix colours, make tones and colour wheels, use thick and thin brushes. We will also be exploring using objects to print different pattern types.

In DT, we will build on our science work by exploring different materials and how they link together to make different structures. Linked to our topic, we will be using a range of joining techniques such as gluing and combining materials to build and strengthen structures.

Computing

We will be creative with different technology tools, using book creator and comic life to enhance our work

Year one will be learning to recognise the ways we use technology in our classroom. During our programming lessons we will be giving instructions to our friends and follow their instructions. This will be followed by programming the Beebots to follow basic commands.

We also will be learning about how to keep ourselves safe whilst using the internet.

RE

Our theme will be where we belong, focusing on different religions around the world and their places of worship, key beliefs and celebrations. We will also be looking at why some stories are so special.

Homework

Children will receive spelling words that will be handed out on a Friday and tested the following Friday.

Please continue to support your child at home with their reading. We will continue giving children house points for reading every night at home and they can collect their reading star certificates and prizes.

A cross curricular homework sheet will be sent home in a homework book at the beginning of each half term. Children can choose the homework they wish to do during the week and show how they have done it in their homework book. This may take the form of written work, pictures or photographs! This homework needs to be brought into school each Monday please. Children will receive house points for completing this challenge!

Yours sincerely,
